Be part of the SSI Blue Oceans community.
Together, let's protect our oceans.
We want everyone to be aware of the environmental problems that our oceans face every day. The SSI Blue Oceans movement supports the conservation and sustainable use of aquatic environments, including oceans, seas, coasts and waterways, as well as their magnificent diversity of plant and animal species.
The responsible diver's code, or how to behave properly in the underwater world
- Only dive under overhangs and arches/caves if you can do so without touching anything.
- Do not swim or snorkel too close to the reef.
- Do not touch or break corals.
- Use designated entry and exit points.
- Do not stir up sand, as this reduces visibility and suffocates the corals.
- Do not chase or disturb animals.
- Do not touch animals unless you have received specific training.
- Do not feed animals.
- Do not disturb animals or their habitat to improve your photos.
Avoid waste
- Never throw inorganic waste into the sea - plastics decompose extremely slowly.
- Minimise waste production: Use reusable coffee cups and cutlery, glass or metal bottles and reusable shopping bags.
- Do not bring unnecessary packaging to the dive centre.
- Dispose of your waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible.
- If you smoke, dispose of cigarette butts in the appropriate container, not on the ground or in the water
Environmental awareness
- Commit to protecting the environment personally
- Prevent others from causing damage through positive actions and motivation
- Support useful projects and organisations dedicated to marine protection
- If possible, collect rubbish during your dives - but only if this does not cause further damage to the environment
- If possible, cut loose wires and ropes and collect floating nets and plastic
- Inform your teammate or the crew on the surface if you have not been able to remove the net
- Never eat shark fins, whale meat, turtle eggs, etc.
Responsible use of resources
- Take the shortest shower possible, only what is necessary to be clean, especially in places where water cannot be stored or purified.
- Rinse your equipment in the container provided for this purpose, and only if necessary - often it is enough to simply rinse your equipment thoroughly at the end of your stay.
- Turn off the lights when you are not using them.
- Use another means of transport or walk instead of driving.
- Avoid unnecessary waste - diets and shopping lists.
